The Kerrie Orozco Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2016 to honor Kerrie Orozco's legacy in our community. Orozco tragically passed away in the line of duty on May 20, 2015.
Friends, family members, and the community of Walnut, Iowa, held a walk-run event in 2017 to raise funds for a scholarship in Kerrie's name, and the first scholarship was awarded in 2017 to Emma Sielstad.
The Kerrie Orozco Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an individual pursuing a degree in education or criminal justice. The recipient must personify some of the amazing characteristics that Kerrie displayed on a daily basis - strength of character, a passion for helping others, outstanding teamwork, and a strong sense of initiative to get things done.
The scholarship is administered through the Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation (SWIEF).
Emma Seilstad, a student from Abraham Lincoln High School, received the first-ever Kerrie Orozco Memorial Scholarship in June 2017.
