2024 community impact grants

Community Impact Grants are available to organizations whose innovative and
meaningful work align with the Community Foundation's mission to improve the lives
of all POTTAWATTAMIE county residents. 

Abraham Lincoln High School Dugout Club
AL Baseball Capital Campaign | $3,000

The AL Dugout Club’s Capital Campaign is bringing field turf, lighting, and so much more to AL Baseball, also allowing for many potential community and youth events, giving kids a safe, beautiful place to begin dreaming of all they can be, both on and off the field. 

All Care Health Center
Increased Patient Access through Care Coordination | $1,500

All Care Health Center is creating a Care Coordination Program to manage current patient care gaps and to establish care with over 2,000 prospective patients attributed to All Care via managed care organizations.  Grant funds are directed toward All Care’s Care Message subscription, postage, and printing costs that will encouraging patients to maintain necessary healthcare, and to connect new patients who do not seek healthcare as an effort to curtail healthcare disparities. 

American Midwest Ballet
AMB Season 15 Education & Community Engagement | $2,000

During our 15th Season, AMB will offer 3 mainstage ballet productions, which are performed by our resident professional dancers and increase the quality of life in our community. With these productions we will offer specially designed student matinee performances for 7,500 area K-12 students, 1,000 complimentary performance tickets to people in need, and movement-based workshops. 

American Red Cross - Nebraska and Southwest Iowa
Home Fire Campaign Including Sound the Alarm | $1,000

The Home Fire Campaign solicits support for the full cycle of home fire preparedness, response, and recovery, as well as compensation and benefits for staff involved in the campaign. Funds provided to support the project will be used for financial assistance to disaster clients to provide emergency basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter; long-term support includes helping clients overcome obstacles to permanent housing, such as security deposit, first month's rent, and home repair. 

Avoca Holidays on Main Street
2024 Marketing and Communications | $1,000

Funding will help support the cost of advertising Avoca's traditional family-oriented Holiday Event on Main Street, Holidays on Main, which brings families of the AHSTW school district together for a day of celebrating the season in downtown Avoca. The day kicks off with an UGLY SWEATER 3K race/walk, followed by a vendor/craft market, Stick Reindeer Races, a Holiday Light Scavenger Hunt and an abundance of other attractions.  

Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands
Readers to Leaders & Math Matters | $3,000

Funds from the Community Foundation for Western Iowa will support direct staffing and supply costs for Readers to Leaders and Math Matters, our foundational academic programs. These programs provide the necessary resources to build and expand upon members’ literacy and math skills through engaging and effective programming. 

Carson Business Club
3rd of July Community Celebration | $1,000

Funding provided by the Community Foundation is providing materials for the kids’ events which would focus on craft projects, carnival games, bounce house, and drive in movie experience, while adults enjoy corn hole and live music. By having the cost of expenses covered, all funds donated during the event are going towards the fundraising needs for the Dreamland Theatre facade/marquee capital project. 

Carson Community Rodeo
Bleacher Replacement Project | $3,000

The mission of the Carson Community Rodeo is to be a leader in the sport of rodeo, while promoting the sport and the Carson community through innovation, people, and a quality event. 

Funding will support the Carson Community Rodeo in undertaking our largest improvement project to date, the replacement of existing wooden bleachers, with new steel bleachers featuring walkways and handrails.  This much-needed improvement will provide safer and more comfortable seating for nearly 5,000 spectators who attend.

Centro Latino of Iowa
ESL Classes  |  $1,000

We are working in collaboration with Iowa Western Community College to provide Beginners ESL to individuals that have recently moved to Council Bluffs and/or have not had the opportunity to attend (or stopped attending) this type of class in the past. Grant funds will help pay for a percentage of rent, snacks/drinks, classroom materials and a percentage of Staff salaries. 

Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus
Back to School Extravaganza | $3,000

The Lakin Campus Back to School Event focuses on ensuring students in our western Iowa communities have access to a new backpack and school supplies regardless of their financial status. While the focus is on the students, the project also helps support their families by providing useful information about resources in the community they may benefit from, helping create stronger families.  Over 600 children and families are expected to benefit from this project.

During this Back to School event, we will help students in K-12th who need assistance with school supplies as they go back into the classroom for the 2024-2025 school year. We provide each student with a new backpack filled with basic school supplies they will need throughout the school year, along with information on resources, activities and agencies in the community that they can connect with, provided by funds from the Community Foundation. 

City of Avoca
Entertainment, Education, and Customer Engagement on Avoca Main Street | $1,000

We plan to maximize these benefits provided by funding from the Community Foundation through events to spur support of our downtown businesses and community engagement. The seventeen weekly Farmers Markets put on from June through September will have special market nights added thanks to the collaborations of individual musicians, the Avoca Public Library, the AHSTW Community School District, and Golden Hills RC&D. Other events supported by these funds include our fourth Lil’ Firecracker Contest and our third Bring Your Builds show. 

Eckels Memorial Library
Eckels Memorial Library Aesthetic Update | $3,981

Eckels Library is using funds to update the feel of our library by providing fun carpets, fun seating, and kid height bookshelves that they can access their board books from. Our new shelving has given us the ability to create a reading nook as well as the cozy feeling throughout provided by the fun carpet and flexible seating options. 

Eckels Memorial Library
Cemetery Walk | $500

Non-profits Eckels Memorial Library, and Nishna Heritage Museum own the Big Grove Cemetery in Oakland, IA and are required to pay for the upkeep and mowing of the cemetery. To offset the cost, we are holding a yearly fundraiser, a Haunted Cemetery Walk that the Community Foundation is helping partially fund. 

Golden Hills RC&D
WanderLoess | $1,000

Golden Hills will use grant funds to launch our WanderLoess project, which will provide programming and promotion of southwest Iowa's natural and cultural resources. Funds will be used to produce materials for the Park-to-Park Poker Run that will be five stops—one stop for our five program areas. 

Goodwill Industries
Expansion of Goodwill Employment Solutions | $1,000

Our programs empower individuals facing barriers to secure employment, fostering economic mobility and community resilience. Funds contributed directly impact training, resources, and opportunities for those in need. 

Historic General Dodge House
Annual Independence Day Celebration 2024 | $1,000

Grant funds provided by the Community foundation will support the 2024 Annual Independence Day Celebration by helping cover the costs of free food, bottled water, Kona Ice, education, entertainment for up to 800 people, in addition to activities for children attending. 

Hope-Net Ministries
Housing Helps CB  |  $2,000

Housing Helps collaborates with the various local housing agencies to come alongside people transitioning from the streets, shelters, and incarceration into apartment life and provides a "Starter Kit" for their unfurnished space. With the grant funds we are able to provide Starter Kits for approximately 14 - 20 families.   

Horses Help SWI, Inc.
Equine Enrichment Activities for Older Adults  |  $1,395

Funds will support the "Equine Enrichment Activities for Older Adults" project that allows residents from three unique Senior Care Partners to participate in one off-site visit to Horses Help SWI, Inc and one on-site visit where we bring the horses to them.  Each visit the horses will provide mental stimulation, as well as peace and comfort.

Inter-Faith Response
Program Fund | $2,000

Inter-Faith Response, Inc., with the generous assistance of the Community Foundation of Western Iowa, pays rents and utilities for the materially poor citizens of Council Bluffs.  We do this by paying landlords and utilities directly.  We will help approximately 12 families consisting of about 29 people.  

The Community Impact Grant from the Community Foundation for Western Iowa will be used solely and completely on the Program Fund so we can help people in need. We pay rent and utilities directly to the creditor, preventing a variety of disasters that can befall persons who have multiple demands upon meagre finances. 

Iowa Legal Aid
Pottawattamie County Legal Services  |  $2,000

Community Foundation grant funds will be used to provide direct civil legal services for Pottawattamie County residents who cannot afford to hire an attorney. These residents are those with a household income at or below 125% of the Federal Poverty Level ($39,000 for a family of four.) 

Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital Foundation
Caring for Our Communities  | $2,000

Funding will expand CFOC's voucher program, specifically supporting the addition of three Community Health Coaches. Coaches use the programs access to critical services and resources to effectively address clients' needs, removing significant barriers to care and improving social determinants of health from the first interaction. 

Learning for All
Hybrid Adult Education Learning Initiatives | $1,000

Community Foundation grant funds will be used to purchase Burlington English (BE) educational software licenses and BEST Plus assessments for ESL participants, and i-Pathways educational software licenses, as well as Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessments for GED participants.  

Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska
Family Education & Initiative Program | $1,500

Funding assists the Pottawattamie Center for Healthy Families in stocking tangible need items within the Boutique for families enrolled in the Family Education and Initiative program. 

Macedonia Heart & Soul
Main Street Murals Project Add-on  |  $5,000

The Community Foundations Impact Grant will allow the 3 Window Add On Project addition to the Main Street Murals Project. This addition is celebrating the contributions of three individuals who played a vital role in the history of Macedonia. 

Nebraska Diaper Bank
Pottawattamie County - Changing Diapers, Changing Lives  |  $1,000

Nebraska Diaper Bank’s funds are supporting our ongoing efforts to serve those experiencing diaper need in Pottawattamie County, and ultimately reach our vision of a heartland without diaper need where families thrive, and all babies are happy, healthy, and safe. 

Omaha Performing Arts
Southwest Iowa Music & Arts Education  |  $1,500

O-pa will serve students and teachers in western Iowa schools through its education programs, which provide a continuum of high-quality music and performance experiences. The grant will be used to fund program components including curriculum and materials, teaching artists, concerts, production, school visits, staffing, and more. 

Omaha Symphony
2025 Mission Imagination at Iowa Western  |  $1,500

The funding from the Community Foundation for Western Iowa will support the 2025 Omaha Symphony’s Mission Imagination concert travels to Iowa Western Community College to provide a unique educational opportunity for Southwest Iowa students. The Omaha Symphony will perform “Amazing Music Machine” at the Arts Center on the IWCC campus. 

Partners for Livable Omaha
Council Bluffs Youth Talent Show  |  $1,500

Funds from the Community Foundation Impact Grant will support a Youth talent show on June 21, 2024, that The Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center and PACE will. This outdoor amateur talent competition is free for ages 3 through graduating high school seniors. 

Pottawattamie Arts Culture & Entertainment (PACE)
PACE Music in the Park Series | $2,000

Music in the Park is a beloved summer concert series in June and July at Bayliss Park. The grant funds from CFWI will be allocated towards musicians’ time and talent, PACE staff facilitating programming expenses, and additional costs. 

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Inc.
No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town! | $1,000

Funding from the Community Foundation for Western Iowa Community Impact Grant enables the NE-Omaha Chapter to purchase necessary supplies and materials (lumber, hardware, new mattress, pillow, sheets and a blanket) to provide fully furnished beds for bedless children in need at this time in their service area. 

With the support of the Community Foundation of Western Iowa, we aim to build and deliver 17 beds to children in need, ensuring they have a comfortable and safe place to sleep. Our focus area includes underserved communities within these counties, where families may struggle to afford basic necessities like beds for their children. 

Southwest Iowa Art Tour
11th Annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour  |  $2,000

The 2024 Southwest Iowa Art Tour will be the 11th annual event connecting rural communities through art. We will use grant funds for the promotion of the tour in order to make it the best event possible, not only for the Artists and Gathering Places involved, but also for those visiting the Art Tour. 

Southwest Iowa Leadership Academy
Southwest Iowa Leadership Academy  |  $1,500

This is a four-day camp at Iowa School for the Deaf exploring aspects of student leadership that will be turned into action projects. Funds will cover the cost of materials, bussing, housing and food, supplies, and recreational activities for the students. 

Southwest Iowa Nature Trails Project
Wabash Trace Maintenance Equipment  |  $2,500

Southwest Iowa Nature Trails (SWINT) will purchase a skid loader as well as additional vehicles and equipment to be utilized for maintenance needs on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. This machinery will reduce our dependency on rental or volunteer equipment and increase our productivity. 

Together Inc.
Council Bluffs Food Pantry  |  $2,000

Funding is going towards our Together Choice Food Pantry located in Council Bluffs. Our pantry is dedicated to serving the community members that are food insecure with nutritious food, SNAP registration, WIC registration, as well as other opportunities.

Vision to Learn
Increasing Vision Care Access to Students  |  $1,000

VTL will partner with Riverside Community School District during two Back-to-School events this summer to provide vision care access to students who would not have access otherwise. The bulk of the project funding goes towards the cost of the eye exam which is conducted by a licensed Optometrist and ABO Certified Optician. 

Vision Treynor Group
The Treynor Family Recreation Complex  | $2,000

Vision Treynor Group (VTG) is improving Treynor for its residents and surrounding communities and to cap off our project, the VTG aims to enhance the Lakin Foundation's Family Pavilion. The Community Foundation of Western Iowa is making this possible by funding the purchase of five commercial round picnic tables. 

Walnut Community Center Foundation, Inc.
Playground Seating  |  $2,500

Grant funds from the Community Foundation will update our community center’s outdoor playground. This project would place picnic tables and benches around the playground and a bike rack so that bikes are placed out of the way and off the sidewalk.
