The Pottawattamie County WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program annually serves over 1,800 nursing mothers and recently received a $1,250 community grant from the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation to construct a Nursing Mother’s Room in their clinic. The clinic, located in Council Bluffs, serves families living throughout Pottawattamie County by providing preventive nutrition services through health screening, nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion, nutritious foods, and referrals to health and human service providers.

“We are so excited to soon be introducing a new nursing mothers room that will benefit our families in the clinic,” said Stephanie Buelna, Dietitian and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator for the Pottawattamie County WIC Program. “With the help of the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, this project will soon be underway. In our clinic, about 72% of mothers initiate breastfeeding and I know this will be a welcome addition to the clients we serve.”

“Issues facing women, children, and families are a strong focus for the investors and donors to the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation,” said Donna Dostal, PCCF President & CEO. “Mothers and children find the support they need when visiting the WIC office, so creating a safe and welcoming environment is key to their success. We are so excited to play a role in creating that space for WIC and the families they serve.”

This year, the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation awarded over $44,000 to nonprofits making a positive impact in Pottawattamie County.
